Preserving chat extracts without breaking chain of custody

Messaging platforms are often where authorisation shortcuts live. A forensic transaction review that ignores chat will miss why a payment was rushed. Capturing those threads poorly, however, creates its own risk.

Prefer native export or admin archive over phone photos. Record the capture time, the account that performed it, and the message IDs visible in the export. Store a hash of the file if your counsel requests it.

Never edit screenshots to “highlight” the important line before the master copy is sealed. Create a working annotated copy separately. Reviewers can tell when overlays were added after the fact.

If staff delete channels mid-review, document the gap immediately. An acknowledged missing period is more credible than a silent hole in the timeline.
